Meet Winston, a taxi driver whose warm smile welcomes new passengers, and whose old jokes make the regulars laugh. Through it all, it’s the way he treats those around him that keeps his back seat filled. “My customers love my personality…I have good customer service.” Operating from Papine to Crossroads to Downtown Kingston, Winston --also known as Murphy-- makes a living in his taxi. Winston looks forward to a day when he will purchase more taxis and hire good drivers that will help him grow his business. Winston hustles because being the sole provider for his family means that the taxi is what puts food on the table. “My hustle is the taxi. The taxi gives me all my money. Without that we have nothing.”
He somehow manages to extend a helping hand to as many people as he can. He tells stories of how he has picked up passengers with no money to pay their fare, and how he made sure they’d be able to make it back home afterwards. To him this is just the way it is, and he sees it as the way in which God works through him.“ One Saturday I’m on the road and I just picked up a guy and brought him and he thanked me because he was walking from far to go get a job and I took him down there and gave him $100.”
Balancing between taxi work and family life is sometimes challenging. However, Winston stays in touch with his wife throughout the day, often calling her to let her know that he is ok. His phone has also helped him grow his business since he also receives calls for pickups.
Between taxi work and his family, Winston still finds time to enjoy the little things in life, like a quick game of draft. He uses this time to break away from routine and make new friends. Sometimes he wins, sometimes he loses, but at the end of the day it’s all about the laughs.
Hustle on with Flow, Winston.
